How to convert CST to EST
To convert CST to EST, add 1 hour. For example, 9:00 AM CST becomes 10:00 AM EST. The minutes and seconds do not change. This simple rule helps you read event schedules, plan calls and compare times across the Central and Eastern standard time zones.
EST = CST + 1 hour
Think of two clocks. The Eastern standard-time clock is one hour ahead of the Central standard-time clock. When the Central clock shows 4:15:30 PM, the Eastern clock shows 5:15:30 PM.
Use the CST to EST calculator
- Choose Standard: CST → EST for an event labelled CST. Choose Daylight: CDT → EDT when both locations use daylight time.
- Enter the source date and time. You can include seconds.
- Read the converted time, date and same-day or next-day label.
- Try the time slider, quick presets or Use current time button.
- Choose a 12-hour or 24-hour display, then copy your result if needed.
The Swap button reverses the conversion while keeping the same moment. The two live clocks update every second using your device clock. They keep running while your selected conversion stays available for reference.
CST to EST examples
Example 1: an online lesson
A lesson begins at 9:00 AM CST. Add one hour: 9:00 AM + 1 hour = 10:00 AM EST. The date stays the same.
Example 2: an afternoon call
A call is scheduled for 4:45 PM CST. Add one hour to get 5:45 PM EST. Keep the 45 minutes unchanged.
Example 3: crossing midnight
An event starts at 11:30 PM CST on 22 September. Adding one hour gives 12:30 AM EST on 23 September. The Eastern date is one day later. The calculator handles month-end and year-end changes too.
Why is the difference one hour?
UTC is a shared reference for comparing times. CST is UTC−06:00, and EST is UTC−05:00. At 6:00 PM UTC, these standard-time clocks show noon CST and 1:00 PM EST. Their offsets differ by one hour.
On this page, CST means North American Central Standard Time. It does not mean China Standard Time, which uses the same abbreviation but a different offset.
CST vs CDT: check daylight saving time
Standard time and daylight time have different names and UTC offsets:
| Time basis | Central | Eastern |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | CST · UTC−06:00 | EST · UTC−05:00 |
| Daylight | CDT · UTC−05:00 | EDT · UTC−04:00 |
The paired conversions CST → EST and CDT → EDT both add one hour. Mixing the labels gives different answers: CST → EDT adds two hours, while CDT → EST adds zero hours.
This calculator uses the pair you select. It does not look up city rules or change the mode based on the date. For a Chicago-to-New York meeting, confirm the local time-zone labels for the meeting date, especially around clock changes.
Quick checks before sharing a time
- Check AM and PM: 12 AM is midnight; 12 PM is noon.
- Check the date: 11:00 PM–11:59:59 PM CST becomes the next day in EST.
- Keep minutes and seconds: 8:20:15 CST becomes 9:20:15 EST.
- Check the abbreviation: CST and CDT refer to different offsets.
