What is a Character Counter?

A Character Counter is a free online tool that helps you instantly count the number of characters, words, spaces, sentences, and paragraphs in any text. This character counter is widely used for SEO meta descriptions, social media posts, SMS messages, and academic writing where strict character limits apply. It provides real-time results, helping you optimize your content quickly and accurately.

Count characters with and without spaces

A character counter measures the length of your text, including letters, numbers, punctuation and symbols. Use the total character count when a field includes spaces in its limit, or the count without whitespace when your instructions exclude spaces.

Example: Hello world! contains 12 characters, 11 characters without spaces and 2 words.

How to use the counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the editor.
  2. Read the live character and word counts above it.
  3. Enter an optional character limit to see your remaining allowance.
  4. Copy your finished text or download it as a text file.

Useful editing controls

Trim spaces removes outer whitespace and repeated spaces or tabs inside each line while preserving internal line breaks.

Undo action restores the text from before your most recent Trim spaces or Clear action. Use your keyboard’s undo shortcut for regular typing.

What do the counts mean?

Characters includes spaces, punctuation, tabs and line breaks. Each Unicode code point counts once; a combined emoji can contain several code points. Without spaces excludes all whitespace, including tabs and line breaks. Spaces in the detailed panel counts ordinary space characters only.

Word counts use your browser’s word segmentation when available, with a letter-and-number-based fallback. Counts may differ from a word processor, especially for hyphenated text and languages without spaces. Reading and speaking times are estimates, not timers.

Character limits for writing

Use a custom target for short descriptions, captions, application forms or assignments. For SEO titles and descriptions, character counts are a drafting guide: a search preview may display a different amount of text depending on screen width and the query. For messaging and social platforms, verify the final count in the destination app because encoding, emoji and URLs can affect its limit.

FAQ on Character Counter

Does this character counter include spaces?

Yes. The main Characters count includes spaces, tabs and line breaks. The Without spaces count excludes all whitespace.

Why can an emoji count as more than one character?

This tool counts Unicode code points. Some emoji combine multiple code points, so a single visible symbol can add more than one to the count. Other apps may use different counting rules.

What happens when I exceed my character limit?

The limit indicator shows how many characters you are over. Your text is not cut off, and you can continue editing or choose a different limit.

Is my text saved?

The counter processes text in your browser and does not upload it or store it in local storage. Copy or download your text before leaving the page.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute. Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute. Actual times depend on the reader, language and text.
